First Look: Anita and Me Set Design

18 January 2017

Here's a look at the model for Anita and Me, showing what designer Bob Bailey's set will look like.

Designer Bob Bailey has given us an exciting and colourful look at the design process for Anita and Me. The first images were created in Photoshop and show potential designs and configurations of the back yards of the terrace houses in the fictional village of Tollington, based on Essington in the early 1970s. Bob explains 'these images helped refine the idea further and further until I felt confident enough to start making a sketch model, which then led to further refinements leading to the finished design. Roxana Silbert (the Director) and I agreed that the back yard should give an impression of real life and that we needed to create a feeling of a tight-knit community; all the locations mentioned in the script would be manipulated and revealed by the actors and that we would keep the style easy and fun'.

The set is a large semi-circle of bald grass, quite scrubby. Bordering this, there is a semi-circle of gates which lead to the backs of terraced houses all squashed together backing onto this patch. We get a sense of small back gardens behind the gates – all with washing lines. Each back yard has an outside loo and its own identity. Some have flowers and gnomes, whilst others have a pile up of broken prams, bikes and junk. Most of the action of the play will take place in this scrubby patch. It is a play area for the local kids, as well as a meeting point, junkyard, garage and drinking place. There are a couple of lanes or alleyways that run from the street outside, down the sides of the houses big enough for a car to fit through. We see the industrial landscape of Wolverhampton’s factory chimneys in the backdrop.
