First Look: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Set Design

First Look: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Set Design

12 January 2018

'It's all black set, it will completely disappear on occasions' Designer Simon Higlett tells us more about his design for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Simon Higlett's early design sketches show many dark images that feature various forms of lighting, such as laboratory equipment illuminated brightly An early design sketch and reference images show the effect of illuminating dark settings to create atmosphere.

How was the basic structure of the set worked out?
I built the initial model box and then had long conversations with Mark Jonathan, Lighting Designer, as it's a huge lighting show. It's all black and so the set will completely disappear on occasions

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a gothic story set in the Victorian period. How did you go about creating a design that conveys this setting?
I wanted to create something very spooky and conveyed the dark eerie streets of a city shrouded in fog... at the same time not too realistic... bodies in a black space.

What is your favourite part of this particular design?
The ability to make it all disappear and particularly the bridge so figures appear to float in the space

Is there something which you've emitted from your design that you really wanted to try?
I wanted to have lots of floating bottles of liquid for the laboratory scenes but it was too difficult to achieve on a touring production

How did you become a designer and what advice do you have for somebody considering it?
I trained in Theatre Design at Wimbledon for a BA and then at The Slade School Of Fine Art for an MA. I became an Assistant Designer for about 2 years before starting out on my own in a freelance career. I would advise anyone interested to see as much theatre as possible and do a good training and keep at it! It's very competitive!

The model of the set shows the all black design with various shaped windows which will be lit from behind. In the centre is Henry Jekyll's laboratory table, with illuminated jars to the side.
