Interview: Meera Syal — 'I loved writing the book and I never thought anybody would read it'

5 January 2017

Anita and Me author talks about writing the novel as the stage adaptation goes into rehearsals in Birmingham this month.

"I loved writing the book and I never thought anybody would read it so it's a huge surprise to me that it became successful and obviously it's now on the school curriculum. Sorry to everyone who's got to now write an exam about a book. I mean, I just actually wanted to write a story. I think prose is probably the medium I find easiest because it's intimate and you have that really intimate relationship with the reader — it's all yours, where as with everything else, it's collaborative but with the book it's pure. It enables you to tell the story and place the reader exactly where you want to."

Anita and Me opens at Wolverhampton Grand theatre, where it plays from 14 to 18 February 2017. It then tours to Cheltenham, Blackpool, Nottingham, Bradford and Edinburgh.
